Monsanto tribunal for crimes against nature and humanity #COP21

Monsanto was accused of 'crimes against humanity and the environment' at COP21 in Paris this week, writes Pavlos Georgiadis. And now the evidence against it is being gathered for presentation at a 'Monsanto Tribunal' taking place next October in The Hague.

"The answer lies in scaling up regenerative agriculture, not extractive systems based on greed and ecological injustice. The most efficient way for taking carbon out of the atmosphere is to put it in the soil by building healthy farming systems."

Civil society groups are putting Monsanto on trial for alleged crimes against nature and humanity in The Hague next October, on World Food Day.

The announcement of the 'Monsanto Tribunal' was made in a press conference in Paris this week on the fringes of COP21, by an alliance of organic, food sovereignty and environmental groups.

Currency Wars: Race to dump U.S. debt #economy #USPOL

China is one of the largest holders of U.S. debt, and right now China is selling its U.S. debt in a hurry. Not only that, but other large purchasers of U.S. debt like Russia and Brazil, are also looking to dump their own U.S. debt. As of June this year, China owned at least $1.3 trillion of U.S. treasuries. This recent sell-off marks the biggest since 1978, and the flurry of those who are newly unloading bonds; is prompting some to worry.

The Bank of China has been busy selling U.S. dollars and instead buying yuan, in a supposed effort to prevent its own currency from dropping below its target rate. Russia, Brazil, and China aren't the only ones looking to unload U.S. debt either. Others looking to join the effort include Taiwan and Norway. Aside from China still holding the leading position in owning the most amount of U.S. debt, Japan is a close second with at least $1.231 trillion of their own.

#CdnPol on GMO Labelling #elxn42 via @RachelsNews

The federal election is only three months away, and I think it's good to know where all the parties stand on mandatory labelling of genetically modified foods and ingredients.

The NDP have been clear about their position. NDP MP Murray Rankin, health critic for the opposition is very supportive of mandatory GMO labelling, so much so, that he introduced a motion (M-480) to label GMOs. Elizabeth May and the Green Party support Minister Rankin's motion. Both parties are committed to full transparency in food labelling.

The Conservatives have also been clear in their position, as they have consistently ignored consumer demand for GMO labelling during their term in office. After meeting with our Minister of Health, Rona Ambrose, and the follow up meeting with scientists from Health Canada, their position became even clearer -- they aren't interested in labelling GMOs!

In fact, our Minister of Agriculture, Jerry Ritz is clearly opposed to giving Canadians the Right to Know what's in our food. In the September 22, 2014 issue of The Hill Times Ritz said, "Mandatory GM labelling is an ill-informed, ideologically-driven proposal that would increase red-tape on businesses, decimate Canadian farmers, and drastically increase costs for Canadian consumers." It's funny, none of these problems occurred in the 60+ countries around the world that have mandatory GMO labelling. I wonder where Mr. Ritz gets his information from... Monsanto?

The reason - two articles and a comparison with U.S. President, Barack Obama:
1. Trudeau’s all ‘heart’ when it comes to economy by Maryam Shaw
2. Sappy line from Liberal leader doesn’t work in real world by Todd Mackay.
3. The comparison by Maryam Shaw - WHOSE LINE IS IT?

I had the pleasure of personally meeting Mr. Trudeau back in November 2009, at that time, a Liberal MP from Papineau, Quebec. The Canadian Ethnic Media Association, holds the Speaker Series of CEMA, to welcome lively exchange of ideas to foster ethno-cultural awareness and promote dialogue on identifying ways to bring different cultural groups together.

He was definitely charismatic, and spoke about his work, looking after the Multiculturalism and Youth portfolio in the Liberal caucus. He told CEMA members that Multiculturalism should be regarded as a collective set of values and hence become a tremendous strength in building a better life for us all. ‘There is truth in the phrase - the kindness of strangers’, he said.

Gwyneth Paltrow Is Starting a GMO Food Fight With Congress #StopMonsanto #NoGMO

Gwyneth Paltrow wants Congress to put a label on it—genetically modified food, that is.

The Academy Award winner and her mother, the actor Blythe Danner, went to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to lobby against the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015—better known to its opponents as the Denying Americans the Right to Know, or DARK, Act—which would prevent states from requiring GMO labels. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives in late July.

Paltrow, one of several celebrity supporters of the “Just Label It!” campaign, which is being mounted by a group of organic food companies working to defeat the bill in the Senate, voiced her concerns over buying genetically modified food without prior knowledge.

“Much the way I want to know if my food is farm-raised or wild or if my orange juice is fresh or from concentrate, I also believe I have the right, and we as Americans all have the right, to know what’s in our food,” she said at an event marking the delivery of a petition with 200,000 signatures asking President Obama to veto the bill.

füdi, a Canadian brand with freshly pre-made, globally inspired food entrées and spices is set to change the perception of pre-made entrees with its ingredients and labeling within Canada supermarkets and consumers. As of late 2014, füdi officially became available to the general public at major grocery stores across the Greater Toronto Area and will be expanding in additional markets within Ontario in Fall 2015.

The beauty of füdi is that with exception of the late availability of organic Ontario kale, their products are 95% Ontario sourced. The importance of locally grown organic produce is one of the many ways that separates füdi from its competitors within supermarket freezers.

"Only a generation ago, every meal started with a simple trip to the neighbourhood farmers' market and corner butcher," said Founder of füdi, Maurizio Racco. Adding that some of his fondest memories as a child were trips to the farmers' market with his family.

füdi products are cooked using an all-natural, preservative-free sous-vide cooking process. füdi prepares gourmet dishes that are cooked slowly to ensure a maximum amount of flavor as every ingredient is reflected in each bite. The result is a wholesome selection of international dishes perfected to appeal to the non-discriminating foodie in us all.

Racco further stated, "The importance of connecting to a more wholesome shopping experience in a fast-paced world made it an obvious alignment for füdi to partner with Southern Ontario's 'Baretta Farms' as the proud producer of organic meats that were grass-fed and raised without antibiotics."

Other füdi suppliers include Burnac as the exclusive supplier of organic Ontario baby kale, Malabar Superspice as the exclusive supplier of fair-trade spices from around the world and Ottawa Valley Grain Products for füdpearl barley. (for further information on each supplier available)

BHIVE Social Labs loves building organic communities and understands the challenge first hand on what it takes to build one, something they call a Honey Hive.  Hopefully by the end of the year, BHIVE will announce a uniquely innovative product that will be the "must have" for future digital publishers, something they tentatively call "A Honey HIVE or a Portal With An Audience".

Over the last 5 years, BHIVE has helped companies as large as a bank and as small as your local mom and pop shoppe to leverage the power of social media.  Over the years, BHIVE has built an organic audience that stretches across North America which they have used for their clients. By the end of the year, or if everything goes as planned, BHIVE will be inviting a number of publishers to participate in this proposed Honey Hive Pilot Program. In short, BHIVE will enable publishers to deliver their content across a network, hence the term a Portal With An Audience aka A Honey Hive. Our own website, Mercado Magazine is actually a working Honey Hive.  Nonetheless, BHIVE can't do this alone and will be seeking support from Magazines Canada and Canada Council for the Arts in the further development of this unique pilot program.

If you are interested in participating or would like to know more, please register at as we will be holding an information session over the next few months. Now onto even more exciting news:  Arash Mohtashami-Maali, Head of the Canada Council for the Arts Writing and Publishing Section, is paying a special visit to Magazines Canada on July 9 and YOU are invited.

The Canada Council has announced a new funding model that will affect many of Magazines Canada's members. You have questions and Mr. Mohtashami-Maali has generously offered to pay us a "house call" to address them.

If you will be in Toronto on July 9, you are welcome to come in person to Magazines Canada's office at 425 Adelaide St W. suite 700, Toronto, ON. Otherwise, you can participate by phone via a conference line. Either way, please rsvp to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by July 2 and state whether you will be attending live or remotely.

For members who can't participate in this visit, or who have follow up questions down the line, Arash will also at the Cultural Magazines Summit on October 16, following the FIPP World Congress.

Engineers Develop Wi-Fi Powered Devices

Why Is This Important?

Because batteries are a drag.

Long Story Short

University of Washington engineers have developed a surveillance camera powered not by batteries or wires, but by regular, ambient Wi-Fi signals. The camera draws enough power from nearby Wi-Fi hotspots to snap a picture every 35 minutes or so.

American shakedown: Police won't charge you, but they'll grab your money

In the U.S., a cash-grab by police and government is dressed up in terms like “interdiction and forfeiture,” or “the equitable sharing program.”

U.S. police are operating a co-ordinated scheme to seize as much of the public’s cash as they can

On its official website, the Canadian government informs its citizens that “there is no limit to the amount of money that you may legally take into or out of the United States.” Nonetheless, it adds, banking in the U.S. can be difficult for non-residents, so Canadians shouldn’t carry large amounts of cash.

Secret Police Bill #C51 Passed with Full Liberal Support #justintrudeau #sellout

May 4th, marked a sad day in Canadian politics. A day that future historians will mark as the date in which the entire landscape of our Canadian way of life changed in dramatic fashions. A date which should certainly be drawn upon by ALL Canadians when the time comes for our justice at the ballot box later this year.

The Conservative government’s anti-terrorism legislation has passed its final vote in the House of Commons, clearing the way for the bill to become law before Parliament rises for the summer.
